The Frozen Few

Winter "Frostbite" Racing

Edgewood Sailing School and Edgewood Yacht Club support a vibrant fleet of over a dozen frostbite sailors who sail Sunfish on Sundays from October through April, including Columbus Day and New Year's Day regattas, and the annual "Up From The Ashes" regatta which commemorates recovery from club-house fire of 2011. Edgewood Sailing School can help you get safely started with this challenging and rewarding winter sport. The Frozen Few also welcome spectators to cheer on racers.

2023-2024

The Frozen Few return to the water on Sunday, November 5.

Registration, racing fees, and waivers are online this year. When you complete your registration, you will immediately have a chance to pay your racing fee by credit card. Electronic waivers will go out by email a few days before racing. You must complete this waiver before racing.

Note that a separate winter boat storage contract is required to keep your Sunfish at the yacht club. The Sunfish winter storage fee is $200 for EYC members or $250 for non-members. Please fill out this form and mail it to the club with your payment.

Frostbite racing results for 2/19/2012

Conditions last week prevented the Frozen Few from leaving shore due to low wind chills and forecast for wind speeds to increase during the day. However, this Sunday conditions made for very pleasant sailing. North wind 6–8 knots, dropping to 2–3 knots in races 5 and 6. Temperature for this week was 42° F and the wind chill was a comparatively balmy 35°.

Wind from Where?! Frostbite racing results for 1/29/2012

Race Committee, Stuart, placed the wind mark between the north and south docks this week for the frostbite sailors at Edgewood. Wind was variable, shifty with strong gusts. Wind was mostly from the west, except when it wasn't. Lulls would often precede a dramatic shift in wind direction. Four boats capsized during racing when gusts caught sailors by surprise. Boats were all right side up again quickly, and sailors enjoyed figuring out where the wind was going to come from next.

Results from frostbite racing 1/22/2012

The Frozen Few skipped a week due to weather conditions outside the range described in the Sailing Instructions and jumped in again this week right after clearing out after Saturday's snowstorm with the "Up From the Ashes" regatta. The regatta was sponsored by both Edgewood Yacht Club and Edgewood Sailing School. After the Edgewood Yacht Club building burned in January 2011, the Frozen Few were first back on the water to sail with a lot of help from friends and neighbors around the bay.
