Frostbite results for 11/14
A sunny, warm, and thoroughly delightful day of sailing was enjoyed by the (not yet) Frozen Few. Temperature was nearly 60 degrees! Breeze was about 8 knots out of the North East. Nine skippers came out to race. Eight returning skippers (Ray W., David W., Kyle, Fauss, Jeff, Jonathan C, Doug and Catherine) welcomed new skipper Bill S at the line.
In the six races, the leeward mark was set daringly close to the observation dock. Skippers remarked that they could see the shoe laces on the spectators. There was a selection of the "standard" courses: a triangle course, T; a double Windward-Leeward course, W2; a G, sailing a triangle course then back up to the windward mark and then to a downwind finish; another Triangle, T: a single windward-leeward, W; and finally an O, combining a triangle with a windward-leeward to the finish.
In a gently increasing breeze, boats got good speed and sailed close together, with no mis-haps; just plenty of fun. All the skippers finished all the races.
Ray W. took the day's top slot. Kyle and David tied next, with 18 points. The tie-breaking rules gave the second spot for the day to Kyle. And Doug and Catherine also tied for the day, with Doug edging ahead in the tie-breaking rules. Many thanks to Dave W. for feeding the fleet, and for Stuart on Race Committee with his sidekick Baci!

Frostbite race results from 11/7
For the first day of 2010 Frozen racing, winter roared in working on a winter storm, with white caps, dark blue water, and a very push wind from the North to challenge the Frozen Skippers.
After papers, sorting out the storage rigs and lockers, and getting the skippers' meeting done, Frozen Race Committee (Stuart, Ray, Jonathan) ran 5 quick races, with 4 boats on starting line (Fauss, Dave W, Dave S, and Jeff) . Two more skippers (Catherine and Doug) checked in, took the opportunity to test their rigs but not to compete. And two other skippers got papers and boats lined up for next week.
The racing was brisk. In Race 5, Jeff flipped (with a call-out of the safety boat with Stuart and Baci dog aboard), but after a pause, got back to sailing again and was scored second for the race. Overall for the day, after five races, Dave W, took the top daily slot, then flipped at the dock after landing, and emerged, victoriously covered with mud - - and still smiling.
Street-side, pairs of spectators from the neighborhood stopped in their jogging tracks, visited the Club, and came out on the dock to watch the action and, for one finish, to cheer on The Frozen Few as we got the SunFish racing season off to a great start!

Starting Whistle for The Frozen Few, 2010
The last of the cruising boats gently landed on poppets in the North parking lot of the Edgewood Yacht Club over the weekend. This week there was a freeze warning issued for Rhode Island. We've also noticed that the flock of black ducks has arrived. The signs are clear. It is time to mobilize The Frozen Few winter Sunfish racing fleet!
We had 11 skippers participate last season, and so far, it looks like there will be plenty of competitors again turning out to take on the elements and the challenging task of sailing fast round the marks in twitchy little boats.
Racing end of season Finalé - early spring melts the Frozen Few (results for 3/7/10)
With a burst of warm weather and sunshine, FrostBite SunFish racing kicked over into Spring, during a season/series finalé and thaw this past Sunday. These customarily frozen Racers enjoyed 50°F temperature, while a crowd of dock-side spectators at the Edgewood Yacht Club's first Open House got to be even "closer than TV" overlooking the contested gybe mark, set close to the flagpole, guiding skippers well inside the marina's North and South tees.
The weather sparkled (and it "sparked" too, with gusts and unexpected shifts). The Clubhouse looked terrific. And the FrozenFew skippers - - all eleven on hand for this last day - - kept boats both upright and aggressive.
Frozen Winners of the SunFish winter racing:
- Fauss Hull - for the FrostBite 2009-2010 Season, and for the Fall Series
- Jeff Lanphear - for the New Year's Day
- Dave Way - for the Spring Series.
[Faus, Jeff and Dave - among the
2009-2010 Frozen Few]
And Frozen Honors to:
- All the Eleven Who Sailed
- Michael Whalen - best "FirstFrozenYear"
- Catherine White, Dave Saunders, Kyle Wishart - "NewFirstYearFrozenSkippers"
Looking at the Ice Cubes:
Sailing in the SPRING SERIES was tight and cheerful. Congratulations, coaching, and camaraderie, week-by-week were shared by all. There was: Dave Way's close win for the tight Spring Series. Kyle's winning out for finalé day, against the top 4 skippers being separated by only an average of one place per race for that day. Fauss, in for the long haul, clearing another 1st place for the Season, and just pushing ahead of Jeff's 2nd for the Season. Then Jeff's win at New Year's, only just-ahead of Michael. And the gang of hot-shots that appeared for the spring series. "People just wouldn't screw up; you had to stay with the race all the way around," chipped in one of the Few.
Skippers had fun. The FrozenFew sailed nearly 70 races during the 2009-2010 season: November through March. Nods of appreciation to the Edgewood Yacht Club, for hosting a year of Frozen Fun; to Stuart and Jonathan for keeping the operation afloat and interesting out there; and to Mike, Gary and Nick for chase-boat duty; to skippers who made boats available; to Steve for keeping "Lucky" charged, bailed, and gassed up; to Baci, Charlie, and Charliee for keeping all 4 feet and tails on the deck most of the time. And hat-tip to LlamaGraphics (Stuart and Catherine) for scoring, and web-presence.
And so, until then, "THANK YOU RACE COMMITTEE!"
See you next fall!
