The Frozen Few, 2010-2011

Addendum to the Sailing Instructions for 12/5/2010

On December 5, 2010, during any race designated by the Race Committee as a "Special Race", in addition to those rules described in Sailing Instructions (Edgewood Yacht Club, Frostbite Racing 2010-2011 Sailing Instructions) the following rules and definitions will apply.

Competition is heating up for The Frozen Few! This Sunday drew a dozen skippers to race Sunfish with Edgewood's frostbite fleet. Race Committee set up 5 standard courses, a T, W2, G, W2, and O. The sixth race was an unexpected bonus, a hefty WL jaunt upwind to Green Can 5 at Port Edgewood and back to the finish line. Northerly winds were variable and shifty with mild temperatures in the low 40s.

Kyle got the best score for the day with 14 points, followed by David W. and Ray W.

The fleet also welcomed new skipper, Kevin, who arrived at the start of the 5th race, and sailed on to win it!  RC Stuart remarked that "it sounded like crispy paper when he tacked!" After eight years suspended in its unopened packaging, Kevin unfolded his "brand new" sail and sent it flying!

Dave S. received thanks for serving as this week's Race Committee skipper and chef.  Bill S. volunteered for next week.

Dave W scored best for the day, in the 10-boat Frozen fleet, with a another run of strong and chill winds from the north east. Second place, by tie-breaking rules, favored Fauss over Ray W.

After two races, the Race Committee sent sailors on a long upwind leg in the third race to the navigational mark, Green Can 3.  That allowed time during the race to adjust the course to match the changing conditions. As temperatures warmed, the wind eased and shifted east forty degrees.

Five races were completed (T, G, W, T, and O). No protests lodged.  Afterwards, back at the Club over chef Jeff's sausage and pepper sandwiches, there was plenty of talk about the day's interesting situations, including a question of Rule 45 ("Hauling Out; Making Fast; Anchoring"). It was agreed that there was no tactical advantage gained when Catherine caught her main sheet on a cleat on the North dock.

Race Committee Skipper Dave S. volunteered to be next week's chef for the fleet, amidst speculation that turkey leftovers might be on the menu.

Frostbite results for 11/14

A sunny, warm, and thoroughly delightful day of sailing was enjoyed by the (not yet) Frozen Few. Temperature was nearly  60 degrees! Breeze was about 8 knots out of the North East. Nine skippers came out to race. Eight returning skippers (Ray W., David W., Kyle, Fauss, Jeff, Jonathan C, Doug and Catherine) welcomed new skipper Bill S at the line.

In the six races, the leeward mark was set daringly close to the observation dock. Skippers remarked that they could see the shoe laces on the spectators. There was a selection of the "standard" courses: a triangle course, T;  a double Windward-Leeward course, W2; a G, sailing a triangle course then back up to the windward mark and then to a downwind finish; another Triangle, T: a single windward-leeward, W; and finally an O, combining a triangle with a windward-leeward to the finish.

In a gently increasing breeze, boats got good speed and sailed close together, with no mis-haps; just plenty of fun.  All the skippers finished all the races.

Ray W. took the day's top slot. Kyle and David tied next, with 18 points. The tie-breaking rules gave the second spot for the day to Kyle. And Doug and Catherine also tied for the day, with Doug edging ahead in the tie-breaking rules. Many thanks to Dave W. for feeding the fleet, and for Stuart on Race Committee with his sidekick Baci!
