The Frozen Few

Winter "Frostbite" Racing

Edgewood Sailing School and Edgewood Yacht Club support a vibrant fleet of over a dozen frostbite sailors who sail Sunfish on Sundays from October through April, including Columbus Day and New Year's Day regattas, and the annual "Up From The Ashes" regatta which commemorates recovery from club-house fire of 2011. Edgewood Sailing School can help you get safely started with this challenging and rewarding winter sport. The Frozen Few also welcome spectators to cheer on racers.

2023-2024

The Frozen Few return to the water on Sunday, November 5.

Registration, racing fees, and waivers are online this year. When you complete your registration, you will immediately have a chance to pay your racing fee by credit card. Electronic waivers will go out by email a few days before racing. You must complete this waiver before racing.

Note that a separate winter boat storage contract is required to keep your Sunfish at the yacht club. The Sunfish winter storage fee is $200 for EYC members or $250 for non-members. Please fill out this form and mail it to the club with your payment.

New Year's Day 2010 frostbite racing results

Overcast, Winds NNW 1-5kt  (Tide running South)Weather mark flag staring down the approaching skippersWeather mark flag staring down the approaching skippers

Jeff and Michael tied in points for the day.  Jeff for having won the last race, benefitted under Rule A8.2 and took the New Year's Day trophy.

This was not a high-wind situation.

With no waves, and only a little wind, the tide became a major factor.  The upstream weather mark (seen in the photo)  was a serioius challenge, and for one skipper, a resulting Rule 44.3 penalty turn became the topic of  cheerful comments from other boats, and was the subject of a video, that was not viewable yet at the New Year's Day pot-luck that followed the racing.

Frostbite racing results for 12/27/2009

Sailors arrived to balmy, but blustery conditions with white caps and a provisional "No" from the race committee. In the time it took to suit up, the wind dropped a few notches, the RC gave "go-ahead", the sun made a cameo appearance between the clouds, the wind began clocking from SE to S, and sailors took to the seas!

Thanks to Nick and RuthAnn and Gary for helping with Race Committee duties today, to Gene and Sue for photos, and to Jonathan, PRO,  for running the Fall series for the Frozen Few!
