On Sundays this fall, Edgewood Sailing School is offering two race clinics, one for 420s and one for Optis. Our sailors will be refining their race technique and strategy in preparation for the Halloween Howl Regatta in Newport on the weekend of October 25 and 26.

The clinic includes 3 sessions on the dates listed below, plus regatta support for the Halloween Howl.

The cost is $250 for the Opti clinic ($300 if sailors do not have their own boats) and $300 for the 420 clinic ($350 if sailors do not have their own boats). Halloween Howl registration fees payable to Sail Newport are not included. All clinic sessions will run from 830am to 430pm, and we’ll sail in varying conditions. We will limit this clinic to eight 420 sailors and eight Opti sailors.

Colin Smith, who coached our fall Opti clinic last year, will be returning to coach 2 of the Opti sessions and 2 of the 420 sessions. Colin is from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and grew up sailing Optimists at the Lauderdale Yacht Club. Colin competed all over the world in the Optimist, winning the IODA North American Championship and placing fifth at the IODA European Championship. After the Optimist, Colin began sailing the Laser and Laser Radial. Colin won the US Sailing Youth Championships, Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta, and Laser North American Championships. He has also coached numerous youth racing clinics and summer racing programs throughout the US. Upon graduating Pine Crest Preparatory School, he began attending Brown University graduating in 2013. In 2012, Colin was named to the ICSA Academic All-American All Conference Team, was an ICSA All-American Honorable Mention, and was also named a NEISA 1st Team Skipper.
