This Week
Edgewood - promoting School-Age Sailors' Dreams
Families and young sailors came to listen to how one family had a 46' boat and a vision; and what happened during their two-year experience living and traveling around the world on Carina.
The boat is an icon for trans-Atlantic racing.
The Potts family shared their experiences, seeking to inspire school-age sailors to dream, and to be exposed to exciting possibilities of a life-long sailing career. The detail of the evening's activities is in the attached email about this intriguing presentation.
And check the ESS website for all the new 2013 Youth classes and Adult classes.

Junior Sailors encouraged to attend
Sailors of all ages are welcome to attend a special gathering to honor the accomplishments of skipper Rives Potts and the crew of the yacht Carina.
Carina is one of the most historic yachts of all time. Launched in 1969 it has withstood the test of time, making no fewer than 12 crossings of the Atlantic Ocean.
In the past few years, Storm Trysail member and New Yacht York Yacht Club Rear Commodore Potts raced and cruised around the world on Carina, designed in 1969 by McCurdy & Rhodes. The adventures of Potts and his crew are framed by back-to-back overall wins in the Newport-Bermuda Race, the St. David’s Lighthouse Trophy, in 2010 and 2012. Carina also sailed the 2011 Transatlantic Race from Newport to England, leading at the head of the fleet for the first half of the journey before finishing second in class. The skipper, crew and yacht have also sailed the Rolex Fastnet Race, finishing first in class and fifth overall, and the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, placing sixth in class.
Potts’ crew includes a mix of experienced racers and a number of youth sailors, who have learned the ropes in offshore trans-oceanic sailing. On April 6, they’ll present slides and videos at a special gathering in honor of their accomplishments.
About the Storm Trysail Club
The Storm Trysail Club, reflecting in its name the sail to which sailors must shorten when facing severe adverse conditions, is one of the world’s most respected sailing clubs, with its membership of approximately 800 comprised strictly of skilled blue water and ocean racing sailors. Established in 1938, the club is headquartered in Larchmont, N.Y., and operates through local stations across the U.S. It hosts Block Island Race Week in odd-numbered years and holds various prestigious offshore racing events (among them the annual Block Island Race, the annual Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race and the biennial Pineapple Cup Montego Bay Race). The Club’s affiliated 501(c)(3) organization, The Storm Trysail Foundation, holds annual junior safety-at-sea seminars and the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta for college sailors using big boats.
