Start June with an ESS Evening By The Bay

ESS is prepping for a terrific Saturday Evening by the Bay on June 1 in Warwick! Registrations are flowing in, the caterers from Amos House in Providence are ready to go, and Edgewood Yacht Club has generously donated wine for the event.

The evening will feature a silent auction, with an amazing list of items , ranging from an overnight on Rose Island Lighthouse, to children's books and a gift card from Frog & Toad, Hope Street.

The $75 donation per person -- 100% of which along with the entire proceeds of the silent auction,  will go straight to the sailing school, as the event costs are being subsidized.  The donation can be paid at the door by credit card, cash, or check.

Sailing in the Wild and Wild Sailing...

Thursday's Level 3 class sailed backwards, tacked with jibs only, and did triangle courses with no rudders. It was definitely not your average "beginning" level class; but from the cheerful expressions on all the skippers and crew, it was a hoot.  And it introduced important skills of dealing with the unexpected emergencies.  

The Sailing School goals of sharing the "art and skill of sailing" were at the center of these exercises.  Each exercise focussed on an equipment or tactical challenge, and each has its own recommended resolution.  Someone said it was rather like going on a series of break-down cruises: the difference being, of course, that there were coaches, and an smooth means for learning to keep control.  Class continues for two more weeks.   Read on

Women's (only) Sailing starts the list of early June classes.

The goal of this new class is to "Introduce sailing to women as a life long sport. Women lead the class, including a licensed Coast Guard Captain, instructors and competitive racers. Women are encouraged to explore and expand sailing skills."  Catherine, an ESS Keelboat Instructor, joins forces with Sheri, a current USCG Master, who's returning to ESS instructor role she had a few years back.  The class explores the basic sailing skills and offers a special perspective for women who sail.  Three weeks, Monday and Wednesdays, 5:30-8:30pm, starting June 3.     Read on for the (aw.01) class information and registration link. 

The first NARRAGANSETT BAY SAIL ("Picnic Sail") departs from Edgewood at noon on Saturday.  Space is available. (rby.01 details and registration link)

Then Edgewood opens the first of its new courses this year with, "KNOTS AND SPLICING" - An introduction to Marlenspike Seamanship skills (starting May 30 for three weeks),  (cbk.02 info and registration link)

And the season is in full swing.  Two times this week for  "FOR FUN &  PRACTICE" recreational sailing open on both Friday evening (re.05) and Sunday afternoon (re.07).
