Adult Sailing Lessons

The Edgewood Sailing School Adult Program offers sailing lessons to adults of all ages on a well-maintained fleet of Rhodes 19 keelboats. Classes are scheduled from June through September. A class typically meets six times over three weeks.

The core program is offered in three levels. A new sailor starts in Level 1 with the basics of boat handling, sailing at the helm with one sail. Students learn both from a US Sailing Certified Instructor and a team of volunteer “Tutors” who are in the boat to help new students learn the day’s skills. Tutors are experienced students who have been through the three levels of the Adult Program. They have an interest in teaching, are given support and training, and have the opportunity to become certified instructors.

Once students have demonstrated comfort sailing with one sail, they move on to Level 2, where they learn to sail more independently in coordination with another student using both main and jib sails. Level 3 uses the full rig, including spinnakers, and teaches more advanced boat handling and team skills.

There are opportunities for low-key racing and casual recreational sailing. Additional courses introduce special topics like navigation, night sailing, traditional seaman’s arts, and helpful marine skills. Volunteers pitch in on the water as tutors and onshore in the off-season. Volunteers help keep the fleet in great shape while learning how to use tools and what it takes to maintain a boat.
