Sailing with a disabled rudder
Reasons:
- Rudder, tiller, wheel or steering cable broken
To practice
- Get on beam reach
- Trim sails so that helm is balanced
- Tie down the tiller amidships with a quick-release in case of trouble
To head up
- Trim (pull in) main
- Ease (let out) jib
- Move weight to leeward and forward
To fall off
- Trim jib
- Ease main
- Move weight to windward and aft
To gybe
- Fall off as far as possible
- Quickly pull main all the way in
- Pull main sheet bundle to other side
- Quickly let out main to avoid rapid rounding-up
To tack
- Head up as far as possible
- Wait for favorable wind shift
- Backwind jib
- When boat starts to turn, retrim sails and balance boat
