Volunteers take on some heavy lifting!

Shiver me timbers! Archimedes is reputed to have said, "give me a lever and a place to stand, and I will move the world."

As the new main walkway to the docks begins to take shape, Edgewood Sailing School volunteers joined forces with the Edgewood Yacht Club volunteers to haul up the old displaced timbers that supported the structure of the club building that was destroyed by fire in January of 2011. Some of the massive timbers were 18 inches in diameter, and 15 feet long.

Just like for Archimedes, a place to stand is not always available when you need one. Tides at Edgewood affect the water depth by about 3 or 4 feet. The volunteers were working on part of the shore line that is often under water. The team worked at low tide to have useful footing below the retaining wall for the North parking lot.

The volunteers used levers and ropes, as well as a chain saw and a trusty pick up truck to move the giant timbers up to high ground before the rising tide got their feet wet!
