Tutors Start Training

Sailing seems simple enough — you just jump in, hoist the sail, and go. That may not work so well.  And at Edgewood we've improved the approach.

The Sailing School thinks that learning safety and sailing-skill takes a helping hand from an instructor and a Tutor.  If that's you, read on...

Safety and sailing-skills shape what happens . The process takes practice. Practice comes best with a helping hand from an instructor. Instructors need training. And that's where the youth instructor-in-training ("JI") and the adult program "Tutors" enter the picture.

At Edgewood Sailing School, our Tutors lend a hand to new sailors.  The new sailors, instead of just bouncing around in a big class, begin sailing in a safe, supportive and enthusiastic setting.

Six adult Tutors are sailing this spring. Each has already sailed from 2 to 8 years here at Edgewood.  They are in mentoring teams with one of Edgewood's four US SAILING certified Keelboat Instructors.  A couple of these KB Instructors, themselves, got their teaching training right here at Edgewood. The teams pair off with individual beginning students in the Adult Level One core-skills class. Each beginning student sails individually with first a Tutor in the boat for about half the evening, then trades their teacher, and sails for the rest of the evening with a KB Instructor. Very effective. Great for individualized instruction.

Students progress rapidly, and Tutors learn the art of teaching sailing, one lesson-plan at a time. Tutoring is one of the steps toward becoming a US SAILING certified Keelboat Instructor. Tutors are scheduled into helping to teach classes throughout the season. The next Tutor Training (instructor approval required) is free on the first two weekends of May 2013.
