Rigging the Rhodes 19 (main sail only)

  • Check for safety equipment (pump, bailer, paddle, anchor, throwable cushion, radio, rudder, sails)
  • Pump out the boat if it needs it
  • Install the helm (rudder & tiller)
  • Confirm that every sail halyard has a figure-eight knot
  • Rig the main sail:
    1. free the boom vang
    2. free mainsheet (lift boom up to shoulder height)
    3. unroll the mainsail (flake out on starboard cuddy top)
    4. uncleat main halyard
    5. lower boom to deck
    6. carry halyard to main head-board
    7. attach halyard to mainsail head-board
    8. insert the main head-board into the mast sail slot
    9. pull on halyard to raise the main 2ft on the mast
    10. cleat the main halyard
    11. confirm that the sail rope (along luff) is fair from tack to head
    12. uncleat the main halyard
    13. confirm that boom is free to run out (main sheet loose, boom not jammed)
    14. raise the mainsail
    15. sway up & cleat
    16. tighten the boom vang
    17. coil main halyard & stow the sailbag
